The term “Antioxidants” is thrown around A LOT, not only in my blog but in products we use and consume daily. I thought I would give a little run down on what exactly this word means and why I always add a “(holler!)” whenever I mention them being in something! I love throwing around “holler!” just as much as the next white girl, but when correlating with antioxidants, there is actually a legitimate reason. They DESERVE it.
-Antioxidants & Free Radicals-

Alright so, what are Antioxidants? The term Anti-oxidant refers to “the ability of an ingredient to slow down, prevent or block oxidation caused by the damaging of free radical activity”. Now, we need to understand that oxidation is what produces free radicals. Free radicals can form chain reactions in a cell which can cause damage or death to said cell. (It’s moments like these that I wish I paid more attention in school during science instead of writing notes to all of my best friends about how much fun I had with them over the weekend prank calling informercials and “accidentally” dialing sex-lines 10+ times). Anyways, free radicals are basically like the cast of Bad Girls Club. Unstable, sloppy, a few screws loose and total loose cannons causing nothing but problems. They are an atom or molecule that is missing an electron in their outer shell. A free radical will attack and destroy other healthy atoms to get the electron that they are missing. This can in end, just end up multiplying the amount of free radicals and making everything worse. The oxidative damage that free radicals cause on the skin primarily is aging. They turn the natural oils on our skin rancid DAMAGING the collagen of the skin. Oh helllllll no. Collagen is everything, like I would literally eat it for breakfast if I could and these little free radicals are coming in and effing everything up. They have even been associated with skin cancer. THIS is why we need antioxidants. Antioxidants swoop in there like the BOSS they are and stabilize these crazy free radical bitches from not only causing harm on our skin, but they also help repair damaged skin such as scarring and age spots. Although our skin naturally produces its own antioxidant system, it is often not enough. NOTHING is ever enough, life is so annoying sometimes, isn’t it? Luckily for us, mother nature hooks it up FAT with antioxidants. Blessins Mother Earth, Blessins!
Top five common antioxidants to look for in skin care: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Retinol (Vitamin A), Resveratrol (found in red wine, nuts and fruits such as blueberries and cranberries) and Green Tea!
Find a Carrier Oil best for your skin type and filled with antioxidants
Find a Detox Water filled with antioxidants
Or do neither of those things and get old, damaged skin. SEE IF I CARE. Just kidding, I do. Don't do that.
HOLLER!
